Spring Break Breeder Pens Progress (It's got paint!)

The versions in the big box stores are about $3K.

Ive wanted one for years and came close to justifying at least one of the least expensive ones when i had a large cabinet order in the past.... but aways made it work without one.

I keep my eye out for a killer deal on Craigslist one day though....

Thanks. The favorite part for me is it used the chainlink of the chicken yard saving me a lot of money on framing. I saved maybe 50 dollars on framing wood.

It's painted. Only things left is the roosts and there is one panel that is crooked you can see in the pics. I'm going to fix that.

I didn't paint the inside because I didn't have space for the birds to go while it dried. The wind is blowing today and the coop is already dry

The pens were painted to match and they work good.


I can't do the roosts until mom gets home so she can hold them while I screw the nails in

Loking good! I wouldn't bother with the roosts for the Silkies. Silkies don't roost, they sleep in a dogpile, all snuggled up.

I usually do a 2x4 a couple of inches up for Silkies that way if our yard floods or is muddy they can get up. It's only flooded twice in 4 years and the water is gone by morning, but stil.

Looks great! I love the way the pens can be opened up.
I really need to get mine going like that. I want breeder pens but haven't bought all the lumber. Mine will be a lot like yours but I don't get that great chain link start. However, I plan to have 4 like you do, right beside each other with the runs in front and just the semi enclosure in the back. Now that I see yours, I am even more urgent to get mine done.
Can I please have another income tax return???

I have to say, it's only been two days but I am satisfied. We are getting out of the pigeons and the pigeon loft will become a shed that will store feed and a brooder. This will give me more space to be organized. The only thing I want to do is of course the nest boxes, which I don't need yet because the silkies won't be laying until Fall and my cochins already have one. My cochins have a roost, just a 2x4 inside their coop. The silkies had one but didn't use it so I took it out. I want to figure out a feeding system so I don't have to walk in to feed and water. Maybe PVC pipe feeders with caps on the top to keep rain out. It'd be coop if in the back of the coops, running from inside the soon to be storage shed I could run a nipple waterer into each pen. Having it inside the coop portions would slow down it degrading in the sun. I just don't know yet though. The doors covering the extra coops work great because my 3 week olds don't need a full run yet, so the cochins get 2 runs and the silkie chicks get the coop. The breeds can all see but not touch each other
