springtime post your new chick pics

Hatching day last month!

Turns out daddy is a Phoenix mix, since he threw phoenix chick markings, and none of the others have Silver Phoenix blood. He was the only one I wasn't sure about. His dad was the Phoenix/Faverolle I no longer have, and mom was Minorca.

In this group, these chicks Mom's were Blue AndalusianX, Salmon FaverolleX, Dominique/FaverolleX, and Welsummer.

I cross bred all of my hens with a blue laced wyandotte. My hens are white leghorn, brown leghorn, goldstar, barred rock and australorp. I hatched them in an incubator. I had very good success rate.

I am crazy about Freebie..sweetest lil thing ever!

These are my first babies, so all is a new experience.

Most will lay at 21 weeks , but depends on time of year when they reach that age. They are more influenced by hours of daylight. 14 hours a day is ideal so winter tends to interrupt the cycle. Adding light to the morning end of the cycle to achieve the 14 hours will help but some feel it is unnatural, Do not add light to the evening as when it shuts off it will leave your chooks in the dark to abruptly and panic them. Cheers and good luck

So far this is my favorite from this year.... Jasmine is a semi-bantam... smaller than a PR but bigger than a true banty. She hid in a 4" high space and sat on 15 eggs! 14 hatched! As you can see, she had help with the laying
