I want to start providing sprouted oats and wheat to my flock and would like to buy in bulk. The local feed store does not carry any and are less than helpful when I ask about feed mills. Anyone know of a source? I am closer to Placerville than Sacramento.

Thanks

I buy my wheat berries in 50 lb bags from the feed store. Also oats. They might be willing to cut you a deal if you order a ton or half-ton (40 or 20 bags). My feed store will special order things like wheat.

I think maybe there must be a misunderstanding between you and the feed store. People feed oats and wheat to other animals, and should definitely carry them.

Bellevueomlet- I am in WA state too- have you tried Wilco (the farmers' co-op)? That's where I shop (mainly).

OK, after a bit of searching the UC Davis Extension folks pointed me to FrontYard Nursery in Placerville. They sell bulk oats for $0.89/lb. I will keep looking, but good option for me to get started with.

Try The Grange in Issaquah. They have wheat that I sprouted and gave to my chickens. I did not check but I am pretty sure everything in the by the pound bins can also be bought in bags.

It is also chick season, so that can make it a fun little trip. Also, tomorrow.

SlowRiverFarms, I live in Placerville and am also looking for a place to buy feed in bulk. A while back I talked to a guy who said he found a mill in Galt that would custom mill reasonably sized orders of organic feed. Unfortunately I don't have the guys phone number any more, so I am trying to figure it out on my own now. I am looking to have a pelleted feed milled that would be fairly universal for my Pigs, Chickens, Turkeys, and Ducks. Then I would just supplement as needed for each one, although realistically all of the birds share feed so I would only need to come up with 2 types of feed. I have noticed that when I put my chickens on a higher protein diet, 20% Flock Raiser, their eggs got much larger.
If I, or you, find out how to have this done, do you want to split an order?

I was directed to the Eldorado exchange. Supposed to be down Missouri Flat Rd. Past Walmart in Placerville. Have not had time to check it out yet. Also 2 feed stores acted as if they had never heard of sprouting when I asked about grains. I am in Shingle Springs...
