I purchased whole oats from my local elevator, chickens love them. So I tried sprouting them in a mason jar on its side on the window sill, no luck (maybe too cold?). Thought sprouts would be a great winter pick-me-up for the girls. Anybody sprouting oats successfully?

here's
a how-to on sprouting oats I found

Sorry I don't have experience actually doing this.
I am assuming that your oats still have the hull. This article mentions the hull must be there to sprout. (When I purchase whole oats the hull is still there.)

I forget which post is mine, but I posted the pics of the burlap sac method I use, it works very well. I am sprouting oats for 20 chickens, if you are sprouting oats in a mason jar I'm assuming you are sprouting for significantly less. You could modify the process w/ a smaller sac, the thought behind it is to keep the oats moist but not soaking wet.

You want to make sure you get whole oat groats that are raw, and not heat treated.
