Sprouts for ducklings?

I was wondering the same thing. I hope someone knows.

I have ducklings a few days old and some that are 3 weeks old. The older ones seem big enough... They love cut up grass and weeds already. And definitely know me as the treat lady.

I think I read somewhere that pulses (beans) are not good for ducks, but I would think that many of the seeds that are sprouted would be okay. Once I got some rice to sprout (accidentally - long story).

Why not sprouted wheat berries?

Until the economy went bad, I had a sprout business. I feed my ducks, geese, chickens, parrots, and even us, sprouts several times a week. I like Amigas suggestion to sprout wheat berries because they're delicious and nutritious!

But you can sprout alfalfa seeds, broccoli seeds, sunflower seeds, lots and lots of things.

I was thinking of wheat berries, alfalfa, rye, buckwheat, and clover for sprouts and I am goinmg to buy organic wheat berries and rye seed to grow grass. What do you think?

I'm glad to hear that it's okay. My kids love wheat sprouts, now I'll have to try them out on the ducks.

I sprout my seeds in a mason jar with cheese cloth over the top. It's easy, cheap and I can have several jars going at once.

Please explain how you do it in a mason Jar? I was just about to buy a sprouter, but I have so many mason jars.

Vicki

I put 3 to 4 Tablespoons of seeds in the jar and let it soak 8 hours- ish. Usually overnight. Then I drain and rinse the seeds using several layers of cheese cloth and a regular canning ring for a lid. I never have to take the seeds out of the jar. I rinse my seeds 2 to 3 times a day and with in the week I have sprouts. You do want to make sure you get the water pretty drained out. I also lay my jars near a sunny window on their sides.

This was pretty informational on sprouting, and shows the jar method using a wire cover instead of the cheese cloth, but it's the same idea. Sprouting is really easy and fun. Let me know if you have more questions. Happy Sprouting.
