hmmmmm what was the facebook link for?

what about using vet wrap or I think I read somewhere masking tape. I have been able to at least trim spurs with dog clippers...I kinda shave off the sides of the spur with the clippers until it is small enough in diameter to clip. then I make sure its rounded....

You could use masking tape (and vet wrap probably as well), but it mainly just makes the spur duller if you will; as it wraps around the spur instead of completely covering/reshaping from a point to a blunt (soft), round, tip. The masking tape will still have a point and be just as hard as the spur, if you're scared of getting hit it'll still hurt a good bit though it probably won't puncture you like a normal spur will. ETA: Also, vet wrap is more expensive in the long run as is masking tape, you have to take it off and swap it eventually I'd assume, not to mention numerous manfighters would have to be re-taped over the years, etc. Gloves can be removed and swapped from bird to bird easily and last forever generally speaking.

I use a small hacksaw to cut spurs myself along with a steel guard I guess you could call it to slide the spur up through to protect the birds foot if need be as well aide in holding the spur in place. Look up "Spur cutting kit", Flyingfrizzle sells them regularly and it will explain what I mean though mine was made rather than purchased since my father worked for a sign company and they had the spare material/machinery to do so simply- I've had mine since then. Worked fine for me all of these years, I usually don't use the gloves because I don't have a aggressive rooster and even if they were aggressive as long as the spurs are blunted well I'm not too worried about them anyway.

Looks like the facebook link is to someone who sells Spur covers.. Is it reliable/trustworthy? Not sure, but you could speak with them and see what they say assuming they still do so.

God bless,
Daniel.

P.S. Come to think of it though, I do have a hen that occasionally breaks eggs when setting due to being large/having a spur I believe.. I wonder if her wearing the gloves would help any in protecting the eggs?

I honestly let my rooster be natural. ( P.S. don't think I enjoy seeing them cockfight. I'm not like that. Lol. I break 'em up when I see them, but I'm sure they go at it when I'm not out there.)

I have one rooster named Warrior and he's a little butt. He just goes at it and goes at it and gets the crud beat out of him, but that's his fault because whether he's in a pen next to one or in he same room he will Ag it on either through chicken wire an cut his own face up by throwing himself at it or Pecking another till he gets a good peckin'.

He thinks he's the boss and honestly has no purpose because he has to stay in a cage all alone most of the time.

Sad :-( though I have two roosters that are in a bachelor pen myself. I am a believer in each rooster having his own girls if that is possible. I currently can free range two roosters with my flock of 16 hens and they also share the 10x12 foot coop. My bernese border collie mix breaks up any squabbles in the yard though there aren't many. But I prefer my roos to be able to have a normal life, occasional date if that is the only way for now, or separate run where they can dote on their chosen ladies. I do some juggling and swapping but try not to upset the whole barnyard. lol. I kinda know who prefers who, and try not to stress the ladies either. Wish I could just get to the point where I'd eat the extra roosters! lol

ETA:
Thanks Daniel! I will look up the spur kit etc :) I have tried the hot potato thingy, pliers thingy but didn't succeed.

Hey do you know where i can get some of the boxing glove for the chicken spur?
For the purposes of manfighting roosters, to protect oneself or perhaps hens during breeding season.

Bellefarms poultry supply has them, at bellefarm.net.

Randall Burkey I believe sells them now. If you looked around you could probably find them in other places as well.

I just found them on ebay. $7.00 My Golden Wyandotte rooster tears up the backs of my hens. I haven't tried them yet.

We have been on the hunt for some kind of spur covers too. We tried the hot potato thing and that did not work. We have been trying to cut or shave down the spurs, but I can not figure out how far to go and no matter what I do it is still sharp enough for him to hurt the girls. He has one fav and I have to keep stitching her up. My husband found these and I was wondering if anyone has used them and if they are any good. We really do not want to get rid of him or keep him in a pen alone, but he can not keep hurting the others.
