Spur Trimming - The Verdict

Quote:
So what's the "right" way to do the procedure? - I've never done either, I just let my rooster's spurs grow, he was never aggressive so it didn't seem to be an issue. However I'm building my breeding flocks this year and will have 3 boys total next year, so I may need to know how to remove their spurs to prevent them hurting each other.

Personally I think I might just do the filing method for MY sake. I don't know if I could handle twisting and popping off one of the spurs without having an anxiety attack!

I have filed down roosters' spurs in the past but now have Brahma boys who just have a pathetic little bump where spurs would be.

I don't think they would ever be inclined to use spurs anyway.

Hi Urbanfarmboi. I trimmed my rooster's spurs not because he was aggressive, but because the spurs gashed two of my girls when he mounted them. They were pretty nasty gashes and I didn't want that to happen again. He didn't do it intentionally, of course. The spurs were just too long and pointy. They also made it awkward for him to walk. I don't think there's any "right" way to trim the spurs, it's whatever you feel comfortable with and confident about performing. Good luck!
