Does anyone know the purpose of spurs on a rooster?

Don't know the purpose, but I have a mixed breed rooster who stuck his spurs into me one too many times. I snipped his spurs yesterday. He's still angry, but otherwise doing fine.

I don't know if this is the only "why" but one reason is for protection. They use them to fight off predators and rivals.
