squab

The reason I ask how much the parent birds need to eat to produce a squab is... The quickest way to fail in any venture is not knowing what your costs are. True for producing pigeons, chickens, quail, ducks or widgets.

Remember!!!!!
Make absolutely sure you ask what they fed the adults when you buy them!!!
If they were raised on pellets and you give them grain (or vice versa) they won't know it's food and may starve to death.
Try to get the same type of waterer too.
Mine were deathly afraid of the new fangled waterer I bought them and would only drink from a water dish for the longest time.

Pigeons DO NOT LIKE CHANGES. Introduce new things gradually.

I'm interested in raising some squab and saw your post on Back Yard Chickens, where do you live ? Is it Lake Land Ga. , what town is it close to ? I have some Utility Kings now ( white ) do you have birds for sale and what are the prices . My email is [email protected] I'm in Palatka , Fl 40 miles south of Jacksonville. Thanking you in advanes for your answer.

You might check out the old king of self-sufficiency, John Seymour. His book "Farming for Self-Sufficiency" has a very good chapter on raising poultry, sheep, goat, rabbit and pigeon. He lists the two best breeds for meat, the Mondain and the Corneaux.

Stromberg's Hatchery sells the White King adult birds for $57.50. Pricey, but considering that a pigeon lays a pair of eggs every six weeks, that's potentially a lot of squab.

Hope that helps!
