Square Foot Gardening Thread

AND final post for the day... a complete list of what we have planted for the season in our SFG. The numbers indicate how many plants per square for is recommended. OG indicates the seeds are organic. I am just getting into saving seed from my own crop. I did this last year and planted some of those. I am exhausted!
Has anyone come up with a better way to store seed packets? I need something that obviously protects them from light and moisture. More importantly, an easy way to be able to riffle through the packets? As previously mentioned, I lack patience. I need a way to look through them quickly and find what I need before I throw a temper tantrum.
This is not working for me...

I'm I've got a bunch of them stacked and ready to be painted. Really solid and heavy ones that I'm going to make a "floating" deck out of . Got mine from a company that builds and repairs cell towers. Also got some solid oak "crates", really the frame of a crate that we are building Chicken Tractors out of.

Floating deck?

I've posted some garden photos here post # 14255:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=6295962#p6295962

Those photos show the garden from several views.
Here are some photos that show the SFG method used in the boxes

This bed has two rows of spinace, English peas growing on the fence panel and then two rows of cabbage planted in a zigzag. This bed is 5 feet wide and 16 feet long. In front are peony plants and a plun tree that was grown from a cutting. It will be planted in the fruit row later.

This is a 4 foot wide bed planted with potatoes. There are 32 plants up and are planted in 4 rows. I zigzag plant them. At the end of each bed flowers both perennial and annual plants to draw bees to pollinate the veggies.

This bed has two rows of potatoes and pak choi cabbages planted in the potatoe skips.on the left and two rows of beets on the right. There were radishes planted between each set of rows and these have been pulled as they ripened and now the potatoes and beets are filling in nicely. You can see an asparagus bed and the first bed described in the back.

Floating deck?

Kind of like a Floating floor ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floating_floor ) The pallets will be attached to each other at different points. They will be painted and an waterproofed and set directly on the ground

I use a plactic container with a lid. I made cardboard dividers for the rows of seed packets like you did. To help me find the seeds quickly, I alphabetized the packets by categories: beans , cantalope, corn, herbs, etc and made heading cards cut from some old manilla folders. I put dessicant packets in the box and store it in my refrigerator. I use one box for veggies and one box for flower seeds, etc.

math ace? Do I smell a challenge?

No challenge intended. . .. I am always looking for a better way to do things, but I approach things from an analytical viewpoint.
I don't like to just see where people finished, but where they started from. . . .

Knowing how good your old fashioned garden did, I am very interested in how well your SFG compares to it

My garden is broken into three sections and those three sections are pretty close to your original 20 x 40 garden. Each year, I seem to out grow my previous gardening spots and add a new section to the garden somewhere in the yard . . . .. I wonder in a way if this counts as a twisted for of SFG

I love being a woman. . . . Dh is always amazed at how much help I can get at the hardware stores
big_smile.png

He sends me with a list and start asking for help. . . ..

The guys take me to the right isle and help me find the stuff on the shelf. After I pay, the guys help me load ( even if I tell them I got it).

Dh just sits back and shakes his head when I tell him how helpful the guys were

I get so mouch help from the guys at the hardware stores that I would rather shop there than go clothes shopping at the mall

Is the fridge the way to go for long term storage? I will look for a good plastic storage option. Something that closes tight would be best right? To keep out the moisture in the fridge?

LOVE YOUR BEDS!! I will be adding marigolds to my beds to help discourage pests and encourage bees to visit. I hadn't thought of perennials! What a great idea. I hope the grass we planted fills in as lovely as yours
