Squeaker, the call ducklings leg problem

If I bought brewer's yeast, my DH would insist on making beer... lol, I can't have that!

I was able to get the Niacin, best part was, it was on sale!!! woot!

Next question, with swim therapy, I have a 10 gallon tub I can put in the pen with her, the pills are 500mg, how much/many should I use? Or should I just use one of my Quart, 1 or 5 gallon waterers and only do swim therapy when I'm home?

500mg is quite a bit for a small duck. I probably wouldn't do more than half a pill in a 5 gallon waterer.

If she's having leg problems I would vote no on leaving her unattended in the water. If she got suddenly weak she could easily drown.

I would also suggest as much water therapy as possible. If you can put her in a tub or pool of water and let her float and paddle, that will help strengthen her.

I have used Poly-Vi-Sol (without iron) with good result to get those vitamins in. 3 or 4 drops a day by mouth will do it.

Good luck!
Good advice!

Wait a minute . . . . I have read that ducks ought not to be given the no-flush type of niacin.

I apologize for forgetting to add that caveat. Wow. Sorry.

Can anyone shed more light on this?

For the niacin, I would add the contents of one capsule to 4 cups of water, mix well, pour one cup of the mixture into a gallon container and fill, then you should have (if my math is correct) 125 mg in that gallon, and the recommended dosage for deficiency is 100 to 150 mg per gallon.

Keep the other three cups in the frij and use them when you refresh water.

Correct. The no flush ones usually take much longer to release. While this works for humans a duck's system runs through it too quickly for it to be absorbed.

500mg was the smallest dose the GNC had... I can only go within walking distance of work right now... my husband has the car...

So, I just opened them up, and they are deffinatly tablets... stupid faulty advertizing... I'm going to have to crush it to add it to the waterer...

When I get the car back, and if my math is right, I can add a quarter tablet, (aprox 125mg) to 2.5 gallons. I think they sell that size waterer at my local TSC.

OFF TO SHOP!!!

Can you get just plain niacin, like at the grocery store? I just read on livestrong that no-flush is formulated differently, and I am not so sure it would be good for the duck. If the no-flush were simply due to the niacin in capsule form, then grinding it up should help, but that does not sound like what we have here. sheesh.

Unsalted sardines in water, not oil, will have some niacin, and many ducks like fish. Bugs have niacin, too.

I need to leave for the day. Prayers for you!

Ok, I was at another pharmacy store, and they had time release... so neither of those would work? I may just do the sardine thing... keep the DH happy and Squeaker happy. Why can't anything be simple anymore?

Just a quick update on Squeaker, I tried the sardines and some tuna for her. She didn't like either. So to combine swim therapy and feedings, I went down to the local tackel shop and picked up 6 dozen minnows. I put a half dozen minnows in the swim therapy pool (an old 15 gallon flower bucket from Krispy Kreme doughnuts filled half way) and she went crazy! Swimming under water gobbling the little fish up. I plan on doing this 3x's a day for her and have the crumbles available when she isn't swimming.

Thanks again for your help!
