I have 8 21 week old hens, and one 21w/o roo. One of my EE was shaking her head and letting out a high and low "EEP!" like the squeak that goes along with a sneeze, but I don't think she was sneezing. She did it (roughly) every 5-7 seconds about 7 times, and after each one she held her mouth open for a moment. Then she appeared to stop, but I had to come inside so I didn't have a chance to see if she was really done. She wasn't doing anything else odd, she was eating and scratching along with everyone else. Is she okay?

Might be a cough, their coughs sound a bit more like a high pitched goose honk than a human cough.

With some of the things you mention I would go on alert for possible respritory infections.

I don't know. Maybe she just has something caught or stuck. I'd keep an eye on her and let us know if you see continuing problems.

How do I know if it is a respiratory infection? What do I do if it is (Other than call a vet)? How likely is she to recover from it and how likely is it that the other chickens would have one too? What could cause it? I feel stupid asking all these questions, but they're as important to me as my favorite cat.

I have a hen that makes squeaky noises and she has been doing it for some time. I don't think she is ill I think it is just one of those noises they sometimes make.

Do some reading on CRD, look at IB,ILT,MG,Coryza. They are pretty nasty things and hopefully not what you have going on. But don't take a little sneezing and coughing from a chicken lightly, they don't just get colds and get over them in a week like we do.

Dust, mold and poor air in the coup can be a problem too so watch that.

maybe one of the other chickens is hurt. when my chicks were about 1 week old one of our chicks was squeeling like
that and i counted the chickens and one was missing. i looked all around and it turned out he was squished under the
water container. i would look around to make sure they are all okay.

Mine actualy do this too. My cuckoo maran sounds like a squeaky toy. It's there egg song. They all sound different. My ee/olive egger sounds like it's screaming at someone before it lays and my wyandottes just have long burrrkkkburrkkkkkk lol

I have a black copper maran doing the same thing. Her crop is full and squishy and she has tiny watery poops. I am guessing she is coughing to try to dislodge the blockage in her crop. I am massaging her crop and only feeding yogurt and applesauce. Things that don't need to be ground up. There is no poultry vet in my area so I'm just working with all symptoms involved.
