squirrel crazed

GRRRRR! The squirrels are such pests! My six chickens have the freedom of my back yard during the day, but I can't leave any food out for them because the squirrels come out in hords. I have to sit with the hens while they eat a morning meal and evening meal, then pick up the pan. The darn squirrels ate through a rubber-maid box I was using to store food by the coop! Our yard backs up to acres and acres of woods but the squirrels have no problem coming up to the house also. Please help!

If you don't want to harm them, get a live trap. If you don't mind being called a squirrel murderer, you could shoot them with a pellet gun, or do what I do for chipmunks. Fill a 5 gallon bucket about 1/2 full of water and cover the surface with black oil sunflower seeds. The seeds will float and the chipmunks/squirrels can't see the water underneath. Lean some sort of ramp up against the bucket so they can get into it, and that's it. Clean it out after about 24 hours, and then set it up again.

Fried Squirrel is mighty tasty. And the tails make nifty dusters as long as you don't keep 'em too long-LOL.
