am assuming since you called them ground squirrels you are talking about what we call chipminks----and they can be as big a nuisance as regular squirrels ---not much to eat there though

The ground squirrels in my area are as big as tree climbing squirrels except they live/nest on the ground rarely climbing trees.

I had a call from a friend that also bought one of these traps. They got two skunks in the trap and wanted to know what to do. I had no clue. I seen a picture on face book. They were dead so I guess they figured out what to do.

The ground squirrels,(Rock Squirrel) here don't do that but we have another critter we call a pack rat (not a real rat) that does what you describe.

I got my trap today in the mail from a WI feed store. I thought no way is a squirrel from our area(NE Ohio) going to fit in that trap,but I caught one in less that 2 hours!

Now I just need a cottontail trap and I am all set!

Got another.Not good for the chipmunks,but those get trapped in the repeating house sparrow trap.

I know I'm late to the discussion, but I thought it was worth noting that it is, in some states (California being one of them), UNLAWFUL to relocate pests including squirrels. Remember, they carry disease. And moving a problem AWAY from you moves it TOWARD someone else.

We found that, harsh as it seems, leaving the cage out for the day does the trick. It's quite warm (hot!) here, and they succumb to the heat.

No matter how you do it, killing the rodents we sometimes think are "so cute" is brutal. But when we remember they not ONLY steal our food, our animals' food and cause dangerous holes for our larger animals, they also carry disease, not the least of which is, in fact, bubonic plague.
