Do I put the traps out at night or before I let the chickens out? I'm afraid the chickens could get snapped..

Put them in a something the birds can't get into.

Make a "tunnel" with some wire and put the traps inside, or maybe a box with a squirrel sized opening

You could even nail them on the side of a nearby tree

Bait them with peanut butter

It won't do any good to set them at night​

My trapper friend nails a five gallon bucket to a tree trunk and sets the trap in the bottom of the bucket, and chains the trap to the bucket handle.

The bucket is lower than eye level so easy to check - about a foot or two off the ground.

This is for red squirrels in alaska; they are much much smaller than the gray squirrels in the lower 48.

I have caught 2 chipmunks in my repeating house sparrow trap.Good trap ideas for the squirrels.

Have any for cotton tail rabbits? The neighbors enjoy watching all these animals,but I stress when I see gangs of them heading for my gardens and orchards! No one else grows or have chickens so they don't have a worry.

My biggest problem with the squirrels is the food that they throw out of the feeders onto the ground. It is a big waste of both feed and money. They also eat eggs. In fact I had six realistic wooden dummy eggs which the squirrels removed from the nest and transported outside to the coop area. A couple of them have disappeared completely.

An old thread, but since it has been revived and may attract some notice, I will suggest a rat proof feeder. Works for a lot of rats......real rats, tree rats, flying rats. They all steal feed and cause trouble. You don't want to be feeding them, ergo the rat proof feeder.
