Squirrels

Thanks for all of your help. This morning when I went out I noticed that there were no squirrels anywhere and thought that was odd but went about my business. while I was filling the water one of my hens ran out and I couldn't get her back in. I went back into the house and about 15 minutes later all of the hens and rooster were screaming. I didn't see anything but when I walked to the coop there were the feathers of my Sussex. Do you think that the squirrels knew that something was out there? Also I will look into live traps for the squirrel situation. Does anyone know when the squirrels have their off spring? I don't want their babies to starve to death either. I know I sound like a nut, I was just hoping for an easy way to get rid of them. So live traps seem to be best options.

Shooting, trapping or poisoning are your options.

There are no poisons approved for tree squirrels. ground squirrels yes but not tree squirrels.

Yes they do. They keep an eye to the sky as well as any rooster does. I've had as many as 15 in my yard going after seeds I left for wild birds........then all would go scampering (full blown screaming sprint) up the nearest tree, and they will keep an eye on danger and move around the tree while keeping an eye on danger. A red tail hawk will send them into a panic. They toy with dogs and cats......but a hawk? Panic city!!!

They are cavity nesters......hollow trees, flicker boxes, your attic, etc.

But one more time........the rat proof feeder will defeat them. A solution known to work. No muss, no fuss, no trapping.....no concerns on what to do about a trapped animal. Just saying.

BTW, I have an uncle who has been waging war on squirrels for at least 20 years I know of. Has tried everything to get rid of them.........one squirrel at a time. So 20 years of that and he still has as many now as when he started.

If you enjoy "futile".......you could follow him down that same path.

IDK if it works but I have been told that Irish springs bar bath soap will repel them. My oldest girl does animal rescue, and has a squirrel problem this is what they told he to do. Just put a bar of Irish spring where you dont want them. I will be trying this in some pear trees this year!

Save your money on the soap it doesn't work and neither do moth balls or all the repellants the box stores sell. I do wildlife control for a living and physical exclusion or physical removal are the ONLY two things that work. And just for the record using something like moth balls for something other than moths is called "off label" meaning illegal.
