Squirrels

I've been entertained by a young gray squirrel Danny, since the end of summer. He is scared too death of humans and even other animals outside and far from him. My brother laughs and says the squirrel doesn't know his name.

I said yes BUT, to him "Danny" means a free meal - he comes running. He doesn't come near me and I don't go near him. It's strange but now and then a pack of 4 identical gray squirrels rush by - scaring Danny away. But they never stop to eat the treats I have outside for HIM.

There is a big nest at the top of an old (dying) scotch pine- I'm guessing they are siblings.

The only thing Danny does is bury some treats in a nearly empty raised planting bed- I don't use it anymore since a Buck ate all the hostas(mostly the fancy, expensive kind) down to the roots. Danny also buries treats just under the surface on my front lawn. I think that will aerate it so who cares?

Before anyone goes around killing squirrels - try googling what repels them. They hate strong odors like onion and garlic- perfume, etc. Also Owl figures and even those of a squirrel will send them on their way.

My area is surrounded by forest preserves and a lot of them (deer, skunk,, opossum, fox, coyotes, wood chucks wander around.) Used to be over run with rabbits but only saw ONE in the last few years - coyotes must be getting them. Actually haven't seen the coyotes in a couple of years. They used to run down my street and into the utility easement into the fancy neighborhood on the other side.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mean any harm to squirrels in general I just sometimes don't understand why they do what they do.

I have an understanding with the grey squirrels around here. Stay out of the feed shed and chicken coop..... I'll replenish your feeder.

Digger squirrels are shot on sight.

I've used mine all last year. Breaking it out in a couple weeks.

I check the trap every few days. I've had 3-4 in the trap at one time.
Dang! That's progress! Do you still have more coming/going or moving in?

Neighbors have them in the field. I set it next to my barn and wait. I caught 30-40 last spring summer. Then didn't catch any from mid August till end of Sept when I moved it back by my coop to catch a pair holed up in my wood pile. These guys were my egg stealers.

So far this spring I've seen one at my fenceline bordering my neighbors place. I have two resident Grey squirrels. There were 3.... but my cat finally caught one. They stick to themselves.

Are your neighbors feeding them?
