Squirrels?

So yesterday, while I was upstairs, my fiance's mother and father saw something attack the backside of ChaCha (my pekin duck). She came upstairs to tell me and when I checked ChaCha out, she seemed a little spooked but was not bleeding and did not seem to be hurt. I then gave her some peas and let her hang out inside for a bit.
When I asked my fiance's mother what she saw, all she knows was she saw some movement that went towards ChaCha and when ChaCha reacted, the thing ran off.
I am currently trying to figure out what could have gotten her.
We don't think it was a cat because I believe that we would have noticed a cat and ChaCha was right next to sliding glass door.
Could it have been a nesting bird? Or even a squirrel?
Today I saw a squirrel hanging around the yard and watching ChaCha.
Can anyone tell me what it could have been and what I can do to prevent it?

Possibly a squirrel, but more likely a rat or weasel.

I don't think it is a weasel. Are weasels native to the Bay Area in CA? Though it could be a rat.
It has been a few days since ChaCha was attacked and she hasn't been bothered since. I will keep my eye out for anything unusual and she will be in her pen when we can't watch her.

What are native predators that you have? A squirrel seems odd as a choice but we really don't have them where i am, they exist overall don't get me wrong just choose not to come around this property much(like i could count on my hands in almost 20yrs of living here )

If there was food involved i could see a squirrel coming after her so it could get to the food. They will venture out of the trees here to snatched some food.
