Do I stack them at an angle or fairly tightly kept absolutely upright? Do I need to make sure the air cell is directly up? Is halfway through day 18 ok to do it or wait until the end of the day?

Big end up and make sure you cut the bottoms out of the cups for good air flow. HAPPY HATCHING!

Cutting the bottom out really isn't necessary. I've hatched lots of eggs out in cartons (just had 25 of 27 hatch) and I've never cut the bottoms out.

Do you have a still air or forced air incubator? I think that would make the difference. The air is just not going to circulate around the eggs in a still air incubator the way it would with a forced air. It could not hurt to cut the bottoms out if you have a still air incubator.
