This is my girls 2nd night in the coop. I have them locked in til the weekend so they get use to where they will be living. My question is I purchased stall dry and pine shavings. Do I put the stall dry on the coop floor and put the pine shavings over the stall dry or just use the stall dry by itself? Thanks
Most folks would put down a little stall dry and then cover with a thick layer of wood shavings so the poop doesn't stick to the floor. The birds like the shavings.
When they are old enough to perch all night you can also build a shelf with JUST stall dry under the perch to catch most of the droppings, scoop the droppings out with a kitty litter type shovel.
Ideally you won't have to replace the stall dry on the poop shelf but of course you will need to sweep out and replace the pine shavings every couple of weeks or so.
In my coop I use just 3" or so of wood shavings on the floor and Sweet PDZ (similar to stall dry) on the poop shelf under the perches.
Thank you so much for the info and picture. I think I went overboard on the stall dry last night. I probably have an inch of stall dry in the bottom of my coop. Would you scoop some of the stall dry out or just cover over it with pine shavings? Will it hurt the chicks to have tha much stall dry in the coop?
I will put a good layer of pine shavings on top of the stall dry for my piece of mind. I am a nervous newbie! Lol This is my first try at chickens and I am probably over thinking everything!!
