Hi
my mum wants bantam cochins ( pekin bantams)
But I want standard cochins.
I was wondering if one tends to go broody more then another as I was looking for a broody hen and their energy levels.

Many thanks

Bantam cochins go broody more often (according to the internet. I only have the minis,) and two of mine are broody right now. Elizabeth's on four (this is her first time, so I'm being cautious) and Sylvie's on ten standard-sized eggs, all of which are developing. As soon as Sylvie is done raising this batch (five-six weeks after hatch) she'll brood another set.

I am curious as to how many eggs a standard could cover.

EDT: Also, my Polish/Cochin cross hatched out three duck eggs on her first try! Go little Isabelle! Pekins truly are ridiculously broody.

WOW! They are like little broody machines.
Are they energetic?
I'll get a bantam cochin then They are selling them at 16 weeks old. When will they start to lay and when will they go broody?

Many thanks

Mine are fairly energetic. They're no Old English Game bantams, but they do like to run around a bit.

Mine started to lay pretty late, (sometime after twenty-five weeks though I didn't record when. I have other bantams, and I wasn't sure whose eggs were whose for a bit there.) Sylvie went broody for the first time at eight months. Elizabeth is a summer chick (sometime last August) so she's at nine-ten months. Isabelle is nine months old if I was right when I guessed that she was eight weeks old when I bought her.

Thank. You is August a good time to get 16 week old chickens or is it too late and near winter?

It's a little late. Here, they wouldn't begin laying until the next year, or might just lay sporadically through the winter. That depends on your area, of course. If I were getting pullets, I'd get them as early in the year as possible. But in Florida, for instance, a little later in the year might be good.

My 2 cents on it.......

My black bantams have been the broodiest.
They are also more active and don't suffer as much in the heat.

My silver laced never went broody but then I only had 3.

My giants are heavy birds so more likely to crush an egg.

I prefer the bantams. The black being my favorites.

They probably will lay in the spring and sit in the spring, while some do rather to sit towards the end of spring or mid summer.I have four a rooster and hen,and two chicks she hatched, great personality and good broodies.

I wouldn’t consider a bantam Cochin energetic, lol, escpecially in summer. They have small stubby legs with feathers on them so their slow,my hen scratches a lot,but spends the evenings sitting around, usually dust bathing or preening,so it can Depending on the weather.
