WANTED: Breeding Quality SPECKLED SUSSEX Cockerel or Roo! I live in N.W. lower Michigan, and am willing to travel or have the right boy shipped. Thank you, Beth in Traverse City 49664

Hi!
Because this is a tri-color variety, in this color esp., breeding quality should be show quality It takes that long to get the color genes stable enough to produce a winning speckled pattern. So you want to look to the vintage, line-bred winning strains and folk who got their birds directly from them. Tony Albrittion , Featherhills Hatchery in Idaho. Judge Gary Overton in Wes Alexandria, OH; The Mongold strain ( I think that is large fowl) in various places. Mr. Reichert in KY ( I don't know how long he has been breeding his strain but he has really nice wins with his large fowl Speckled Sussex). All three win big in quality competition over successive years. There may be others but these are the ones I know . And folk who bought from these gene pools. Check the Breeder's Directory at the parent club American Sussex Assoc. website.

Out of more than 780 Master Exhibitors,Judge Overton was only the 93rd, granted in 1989!

You can surf the entire site from here but remember this is 2013 prices and availability.
Dr. Waltz does not show as much as the other strains. The factors here are diversity,
and natural raising and careful selection for quality.
Their website seems to be down last time I checked so here it is via archive.org Wayback Machine:

This is a superb article by Yellow House Farm who one of the finest authors on BYC.
by Plummer are the ideal bird. They are a concept to use as an ideal. YHF explains why.
What should light Sussex roo and hen look like for showing?
I think it is 6 months. I am not sure. I found this great informational page but can't find anything about minimum age to show on it.

Hi !

They are not approved by the APA. You can show
them but they cannot get to Champion Row. The
Sussex is in the English Class.
Best,
Karen
