Either way, masses that large are dectable with a cloacal exam.

Sorry, I don't think I saw that post, but If I had I would have suggested that you do a cloacal exam. Cloacal exams here have revealed many things for me, some end well, like a simple egg binding, but most others, like ascites, cancer and internal laying. You did all you could for your hen, plus you helped others by documenting her necropsy. Your only chance of saving her would have been surgery, which is not an option for most, myself included.
