Stars or whyandotte?

I've decided to get two chickens as pets and layers. I live near people and do it would be nice to have quiet non-flighty birds. The local feed store here has in Red and Black stars and Columbian whyandottes. These both seem to be very friendly breeds with good egg productivity, but as far as noise what do you recommend?

They are both good from what I hear. The black star and red star are also called black/red sexlink. The chicks with the white spot on the head are male. roosters are wonderful but you don't want too many in the same coop with the hens. But because you have to worry about noise the hen red or black sexlink sound good.

I'm not getting any roosters, just two hens. I might actually get one red and a wyandotte because they are so pretty. Does anyone know how to make sure I get a female wyandotte? The chicks are 5 days old.

. The wyandottes are much prettier than the production sex links but if the feed store ordered strait run not pullets it's gana be luck of the draw.

Yep, that is why I said sexlink was good, feed stores often order strait runs. If they are pullets they are vent sexed at the hatchery which isn't fool proof even for the experts. If they do have pullets then a wynadotte is a good choice. I have one and she is a lovely hen and good layer.

I'm thinking that I might try my luck and get 1 star and 2 wyandotte, if they both end up hens even better, but if I get a rooster maybe he could end up on the dinner plate lol. Do you think wyandotte make ok fryers?

Also if anyone knows links I could check out on that whole process that would be awesome.

I've got both. The reds are much better layers. My columbian wyandotte is a bit skitish, but very friendly. She is not a good layer.

Yeah I was just reading something saying the same thing!! Lol. It's all so confusing ha ha. Maybe I should just start off with the two reds (are black stars the same?). And get.different breeds later when I'm more experienced.

Also what exactly does strait run and pullet mean?
