I got my first chickens 1998. My friend hatched some eggs for her daughter's first grade class and she gave me 3 bantam hens Barred Rocks - the following year - 2 more...one yellow ? and a Cochin, both bantams. They laid eggs and all was good. I still have one of the original hens!!! I decided I was not going to get anymore chickens when she dies. THEN someone dumped a rooster. I caught him, built a new coop and run for him...then STUPIDLY I believed a local farmer selling chicks and pullets that she could guarantee that the ones I wanted were hens. I bought 6 because I don't want a lot, but I read that 5 was the minimum number per rooster. One chick died the first day. The other 5 look great, BUT suddenly one of them doubled in size in few days. SO I think I have a second rooster. And since the new ones are not all the same kind or age - I may have more roosters. I can't tell yet. I got 2 Black Autrathorpes, one Buff Orpington, a Silver Laced Wyandotte, and I forget what the last one was...I wanted a Golden Laced Wyandotte but I am not sure that is the one that survived or not...it is all black. Pictures of all:
