starter flock

I used a broiler pan - the top, slotted part lets water down into the pan. It fills up, but that kind of idea - the catchers grew with the ducks and waterers. Quart sized waterers worked with the broiler pan, gallon sized I used a large steel salad bowl and set the waterer on an upside-down butter tub. The three gallon waterer had a large five inch deep rubber bucket under it.

I really like your idea, and think it does need to be a little bigger. Holderread writes about making a box-like frame with wire mesh on one side over something absorbent like grass.

You seem to have thought through a bunch of this - the little ducklings always taught me something and I think each flock is different, anyway. You might want to search the forum about solutions people have used, since soaked bedding seems to be a challenge for many people.

I would not want to wait - although my ducklings arrived four weeks ahead of schedule, and it was a very cold spring, so I had to modify my plans and kept them indoors for three months. It was not that bad - I only had eleven runners.

Thanks for the tip. The plan is to order them for delivery in late march. I have the holderread book, the new updated one too. Haven't read it yet.

OK. I just placed my order for the march 28th ship date from metzer farms. I scaled back some. 15 ducks and 4 geese. 5 golden layer 300 ladies, 5 blue sweedish straight run, 5 welsh harequin straight runs and 4 (2 pairs) buff geese.

Storey's Guide to Raising Ducks has been a blessing to me. Nice that you can get the new edition! I was just thinking about that yesterday.

As far as raising the ducklings, I followed Holderread's advice closely and they all reached maturity. I lost one - don't know if it was hardware disease or congenital problem. Everyone else has been quite healthy.

May your ducks bless you and you bless them!

Keep us updated! Sounds like a wonderful bunch!
