When breeding for production, are you trying to keep the birds pure or doing crosses?

RIR over White Rock makes a good brown egg layer.

And the ideal white layer would be a well bred White Leghorn.

But if crossing, make sure to choose the Rooster and hen with the best traits for breeding stock, which can be achieved through linebreeding.

Hi Vicky and welcome to BYC :frow you might want to check out SPN (they are strictly SOP) and the conservancy on breeding info. Again, welcome and glad you joined us:ya And if you're pasture based, pm me and I'll point you to some more resources...

I joined this thread late, so don't remember who posted what--but in answer to the question: Can you make money off poultry its a simple yes. You need a sound marketing plan, good quality products that are in demand and a farm to table approach. :thumbsup

I asked the question. I do not see how you can make money raising chickens. Not on a small scale. I can't even sell them for the feed costs.

PM me and we can discuss in a private forum. Don't get me wrong, its not without challenges... The real issue becomes how small is small.
