Hi! I plan on building a coop this summer. I checked with the local ordinance and we're in the clear for three hens.

From my research on this site, it seems that the White Star Hybrid is the best breed for us given the heat.

Does anyone else from "the deep south" have any tips or suggestions on breeds and coop construction?

Thanks,

! Pleased you joined us. Not familiar with White Stars...but I would think any bird that is white, thus reflects rather than absorbs the summer sun is a good thing. I think generally birds with large combs and wattles are good in the hot climates as a lot of heat escapes through those - helping to cool the bird. Good luck to you!

I am also not familiar with that hybrid. You might google the Henderson chicken chart, it lists charactoristics including temperature hardiness for many purebred birds. I have Basques (Euskal Oiloa) and they are reported to be very heat tolerant.
