Hello everyone! I'm new to the forum, and am planning to start my own flock soon. I own horses and the farm I used to work at and board had a flock that introduced me to the lovely world of chickens. I have several acres, and am starting a flock not only for meat and eggs, but also for the enjoyment. My chickens will be allowed to roam my farm and return to their coop any time they please. I plan to lock them in during the night, since there is a coyote problem in my area. (The horses drive them off during the day, but at night they are stabled, so my flock will need protection also.)

I'm looking for a flock that has good mothering instincts, and can function as both meat and egg. I found during my time at the old farm that foraging can be learned, but not so much mothering, so that will be my top priority. So far I've decided to have a mixed flock of wyandottes, Sussex, Orpington, and a Cochin or two, with about ten chickens to start. Would that be a good idea, or could someone recommend a breed they've had experience with? Also, I can't decide on what breed of rooster to have. I'll be hatching whatever I get, so integrating wont be a problem. Thank you in advance to any help you can give!

I have 3 of 5 EE's left.Good birds.I have 1 of 3 RSL hens. I would not recommend those.Nice birds, but one died, one needed to be culled, and the last laid eggs for only 1 year.I heard buffs are good.Mixing is good, but smaller hens can get bullied.

As for roos I think it just depends on the roo.I have no idea what mine is.I got him free off

craigs and he is the best.Nice to me and the hens.Very protective.Enjoy your chickens!

Thank you for the info! Buffs are my favorite at the moment. I suppose I'll just have to experiment with some roos. I'll have a good dinner if one doesn't work out.

Thank you!
