Hello everyone! I'm new to the forum, and am planning to start my own flock soon. I own horses and the farm I used to work at and board had a flock that introduced me to the lovely world of chickens. I have several acres, and am starting a flock not only for meat and eggs, but also for the enjoyment. My chickens will be allowed to roam my farm and return to their coop any time they please. I plan to lock them in during the night, since there is a coyote problem in my area. (The horses drive them off during the day, but at night they are stabled, so my flock will need protection also.)
I'm looking for a flock that has good mothering instincts, and can function as both meat and egg. I found during my time at the old farm that foraging can be learned, but not so much mothering, so that will be my top priority. So far I've decided to have a mixed flock of wyandottes, Sussex, Orpington, and a Cochin or two, with about ten chickens to start. Would that be a good idea, or could someone recommend a breed they've had experience with? Also, I can't decide on what breed of rooster to have. I'll be hatching whatever I get, so integrating wont be a problem. Thank you in advance to any help you can give!
