I have been lurking on ths web site since january and now have 10 hens and a rooster in my coop. Right now is the perfect time to get chicks at your local feed store; call around to find the breeds available and reserve before you get there as they sometimes go fast.
Chicks are cheaper than ready to lay pullets, around 3 dollars vs up to 40. And I agree, if you raise chicks, they will get to know you and you should get to know them. I have 5 ee(layers of blue and green eggs), 2 RIR, and 4 LB. Chickens have feathers and should be able to handle anything the central coast of calif. can dish out weatherwise. I am in Calaveras county in the sierra foothills and I have friends with chickens that roost in their trees in temps from 20's to 110's.
Your pre existing coop sounds ideal, and the perfect price. Good Luck.
