I like to go with a blue rooster over all 3 colored hens. You get a bit of everything that way, and they look so nice in the green grass. I remember when we had grass.....

The best set-up I ever saw was a blue male, a black female, and a splash female. I got at LEAST two chicks of each color from a dozen hatching eggs out of that mix.

To even out the odds, try a blue male with a few splashes and blacks. You'll still get a 50% blue, but it's a better chance than the 50% you get from blue x blue, because instead of a straight up 25% chance splash or black from each egg, you get a 50/50 chance from each egg.

Here is the code:

(Blue X Blue does not give 100% Blues)

Blue X Blue = 50% Blue, 25% Black , 25% Splash

Blue X Splash = 50% Blue , 50% Splash

Blue X Black = 50% Blue, 50% Black

Black X Black = 100% Black

Splash X Black = 100% Blue

Splash X Splash = 100% Splash

Only way to hypothetically get 100% Blue, is to do Black X Splash.

I always figured if folks did want black they can often get them alone (in most breeds) and most breeders I've seen have had a splash roo over blue and splash hens...but that's only if you didn't really care for the blacks. I have a Black and Splash roo over all three colors of hens in my Orps, and a Blue roo over Blue and Splash hens in my Silkies.
