I have a mixed flock, and I have to say of them, my dark brahma pullet was the friendliest from the start. She didn't mind being picked up and napping on a hand. She still doesn't mind Terrribly being picked up. That said, every chicken has their own personality. I just really like my mixed flock. LOL

Dominique, Australorpe, EE, Barred Rock. I'd avoid the sex links if choosing a flock for a family with kids. They often succumb to reproductive illness. Location is important. Can you put it in your profile? Big combs do well in warm climates, small combs do better in snow country.

Northwest Arkansas. Definitely harder summers than winters, though it drops below freezing often in the winter

I say 1Welsummer or Marans, 1 Lavender Orpington, 1 Cream Legbar, and 1 Olive Egger (not a breed but a mutt that lays olive green eggs)

All pullets/hens are sweet.

If eggs are the goal, go sexlink for brown or leghorn for white. With that few layers, if they all go broody at the same time, no eggs for you.
