Starting my coop tomorrow!

View attachment 1233892 Welcome to Backyard Chickens!
I live in Woodland too.

Your plans sound fine. Make you you do not have any roosters though. They usually catch you eventually....

Ronott- another Woodlander!

I was wondering why/how BYC had info on the laws in Woodland. (6 birds?) I was happy to read that.

I live in Spring Lake- my backyard is right on 102. We have raccoons, hawks, etc. etc. So securing against them is going to be a big problem.

You don't by any chance live off of Pioneer near Gum do you? I used to hear a rooster over there all the time...

I am closer to Gibson and Ogden.
Where I am there is very limited predator activity. Hawks leave them alone--likely because of the crows. Raccoons are not a problem either and I think it is because I am surrounded by dog owners.
When I had a rooster, it was in the garage so the noise did not carry far. Still too close to someone though

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

BYC has Topic of the Week articles which I have found to be a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group. This one might interest you:

Thanks for all the support!

I am a prolific picture taker- I am sure you will see far more than you would like (even for the chicken fans).

I am going to modify one of the highly rated plans here on BYC. I've been reading up, and I have a good friend with chicken knowledge.

I hope to be able to update you through the weekend...it is a 3 day weekend for me, and I would love to make some progress. But first I need to remove a garden bed which has 3 yards of soil...and that is step 1.

I really do appreciate all of the info and guidelines. I will post progress pics and hopefully get feedback along the way.

I have included a photo (taken from this website) of the coop I want to emulate.

Unlike many of you who are talking about the cold...my biggest problem will be heat. I'm thinking about covering the western side with redwood lattice, in order to provide more shade.

Unfortunately 4 x 10 is about the largest I can go right now. Most of my yard is 'decorative' (and I like it that way!) so in my garden is the best spot. And as much as I think I will like chickens...I also LOVE my tomatoes, cantaloupe, basil, etc.

Oh! And there is a fig tree that is right next to the coop location. I'm hoping it will be fine for the chickens to eat the figs that fall?!!?

Thanks again-
Well I'm just checking on you again. Please tell us you're still alive :idunnoNo major injuries or catastrophes :barnieWell let us know, but if you are dead and respond holy crap:wee:oops:
