I am finally moving to a home with a yard large enough to accommodate a flock. I am just starting my research. I kept bantams as a4H project as a kid and i am looking forward to seeing all the new improvements in chicken husbandry. I am in Atlanta and i look foreward to all the great info on this site! So- bantams or hens??

Welcome, bantam can be hens, I think you mean bantam or standard. I prefer my Cochin bantams, but I keep both types in different breeds, in separate coops since it's hard to decide when it comes to chickens.

Welcome! I'm fairly new to this site as well, and have found it contains much knowledge.
Why not get both? Bantams and ordinary sized hens go well together, especially if they've grown up together. Size doesn't matter in their case.

Good luck with your new home, and hopefully with your new chickens! :D

You'll love chickens I can assure you of that :)

I love both my standards and bantams, but if you want character packed chooks, I would suggest bantams. They literally make me laugh every single day ;)

Bantams are BIG chickens in a small container - they have no idea they are small. My friend has 3 -- 2 matronly Serama hens, and one younger Silkie hen, that they don't care for. The seramas kick the dog out of his bed when they pretend they are going broody, steal food from his dish and take toys out of his mouth. Luckily he is a very good natured senior citizen dog.

They also hide behind the sofa if my friend has company (like me) and pace back and forth waiting for me to leave.Sometimes they peek out to see if I left yet. They look like feathered soccer balls.

Most bantam breeds are more gentle and quiet than the bigger breeds. They also seem to handle confinement better, and are less prone to aggression amongst members. Their coop can be a bit smaller too, though bigger is always better.

Some bantam breeds are pretty productive as far as laying, my cochins and d'uccle continue to lay longer in their lives than my standards. I personally would choose bantams if I had to choose.

Mixing standards and bantams can work, especially when raised together, but sometimes the bantams end up bullied.

Thank you for your reply. I thought that might be the case. As a child i had 2 silver duckwings. I am feeling a bit nostalgic for them.
