Well I loved my gray mutts but as one turned out to be a Roo (only have 2 cuz live inside city limits) I went searching for one more pullet and ended up with a matched pair of dark leghorns. These hens only top out around 3# which will work better for the size of my back yard coop and yard. They are only locked up at night but want plenty of room in the upstairs enclosure where the nest boxes are. Otherwise they are in the bottom all screen area but cold in winter.

Any input on my new "flock" would be appreciated.

I don't have dark leghorns I have a brown leghorn and a white leghorn they're just as easy to take care of as other chickens but leghorns tend to be flighty and skittish so their not super friendly

Leghorn are not known as being overly friendly. ...you can overcome some of their skittishness but they tend to remain pretty aloof even when "tame". They are no more demanding of care than other breeds and their build makes them very efficient birds to feed. Presumably their current housing (in the photo) is temporary?

Oh I just bought this cage to keep them overnight until I take my "mutts" to my niece and clean coop again. Totally temp.

The Dark Brown Leghorns are beautiful fowl. The Leghorn is one of the best bred fowl we have here in the States, be it fancy or production.

With that said, they should get a little larger than 3 lbs. 4 - 4.5lbs is more typical of the noncommercial leghorns. Wish you luck with them, they are great birds.

Great to know...my coop is not large but is great for 2 birds. I feel better, room wise, having smaller than the reg 5-6 pound birds in it, especially for winter. They only sleep in it but still don't want them cramped. Thx so much for the info.
