Hi, my name is Dorie. I live near San Antonio, Texas. We were caring for my MILs chickens, but lost most of them to stray dogs, foxes and other wild animals. We decided we should start with some baby chicks. We have eight and I have no idea what breed they are. Two of my granddaughters helped picked them out at the feed store. We think they are about six weeks old. We have them on our deck to keep a better eye on them. We are hoping to get more soon.
How old are they when you can tell which ones are roosters?

:welcome
:yesss: We are glad you joined this flock!
Jump right in and make yourself at home.
Look for the 'What breed/gender is this' forum to upload pictures of the chicks for help confirming their sex.

Hello Dorie. Welcome to BYC and congratulations on the new members of your family!

It really depends on the breeds as to what age you can tell their sex. With a few exceptions, most breeds are pretty evident by about 6 weeks in my opinion so hopefully you’ll be able to tell very soon.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

BYC has Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Including your general location on your profile will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have and vice versa.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.
