Hi everyone! I am starting my plans on a 10x10x6 coop. I currently have 6 rir chicks. but will be adding more very soon. I live in Georgia so my main concern is proper ventilation. there will be 2 2x2 windows in the front that open and a 3x5 in the rear with a turbine in the roof. Will this be adequate ventilation for a high of 100 degrees during the day and extreme humidity. Any reccomendations on what to do about the ventilation issues please let me know. Thanks

Welcome to the forum!

Here's the best reference I know on the subject of ventilation:

In addition to having plenty of ventilaton at roost level for summer plus more higher up for winter, try to site your coop in the deepest natural shade you can find in your yard. I have an open sided coop (wire only on all 4 walls), but I stupidly put it someplace that gets afternoon sun. Our conventional closed coop (with plenty of ventilation) is in a shaded part of the yard and stays cooler inside than the open sided coop. I also insulated the conventional coop and used radiant roof sheathing, figuring every little bit helps.

Could you put a large door on it and leave it open during the day to help keep it ventilated? I have one whole side on my coop that opens up to clean it and when we get really high temps during the day I completely open that side of the coop, only shutting it after the sun goes down and the girls are in (I'm in central VA). It also helps shade the front of the coop cause my door opens up and creates a little roof when secured open with chains and hooks.

I agree you need shade and if not shade, you def need insulation. I also put frozen bottles of water in their waterer in the morning and fill the waterer with cold water before I go to work. I have an old frying pan I fill up with water for a little wading pool for them when its very hot out. Then they get cold watermelon too in the evening.
