I live in a small town where chickens are not allowed in city limits. We are hoping to change that. I currently raise chickens at a friends house outside of town, but I would love to change the city ordinance to start a small flock on my property. Advise?

I would say if it was me my first step would be to go to the city or town hall find out how you can get into one of thier meetings and make it a point that its important to you that you are able to keep your chickens at your home in city limits. Find out about a petition either paper or over facebook or other aocial media. see why chickens aren't allowed within city limits? Sorry i couldnt be more help!

You could put up notices at feed stores etc in your town, to seek other chicken folks who would rally with you to have the laws changed. Post on your state thread to see who may be near you and support your cause. Others may know more about taking on city hall. Good luck to you

So glad you have joined us. Brilliant idea to start your flock at your friends house, would never have thought of that solution to get started with your own flock. Your friend is special to help you accomplish this!

You have already been given links to info that will get you started.

Many have been unsuccessful because of political issues - even those who have the power to approve may really want it to pass but seem to fear re-election issues! My advice is to get as much support you need to get it before the governing committee. If there have been past attempts, try to find out who and why it did not pass. This is in public records of voting results.

Compose your argument in a manner to overcome the prejudices opposing chickens. The usual ones include : smell, noise, failure to contain the flock on one's property, inadequate coop run facility, manure management, lack of knowledge on benefits of small backyard flocks and fear of lowered property values of neighborhood. Consider attaching photos of pretty clean coops and beautiful flocks. Use examples of cities that have coop tours. And comparison of small backyard flocks and ordinances that don't regulate other outdoor pets - dog kennels, barking, breeches of leash laws.

Persevere, expect defeat in your first attempt, and keep trying.

Good luck with the battle.

The chicken issue has been brought before City Council many times by others to no avail. Thank you for the suggestion MakelaNJoe.
