Hi BYC,

We are 9 Volunteers (Tennesseans) living in Northern Kentucky looking to start our dream of self sustaining living and we want to make chickens a part of that dream.

We need your help! What would you do with 40 acres of beautiful rolling Kentucky land? What would your dream chicken lair look like? I'm looking to get your advice, recommendations and support, and maybe, someday, I'll be able to give back or at least humor you with my foibles.

Very nice to meet the Adams family, Welcome to Backyard chickens. You might want to peruse the coops section and come up with your own Dream coop. With 40 acres, you could raise every breed you want,

You could get crazy amounts of breeding projects going.
 
I'm torn between free range and cooped chickens. We used to drive by farms in Tennessee with chickens roaming free all over the property, such a neat sight. I also want to harvest eggs and have an enclosure that will provide safety and ease of gathering eggs. I worry about predators and chickens that will roam too far. I also want a rooster! Yes, I know what I'm asking for, I love the sound of a rooster. Can I throw in a peacock or two?
 
Interested in breeding. Don't know where to start with that. I feel pretty confident starting up with buying a few and collecting eggs. Seems like breeding is a whole new ballgame not for the novice.

I'm up for the challenge.
 
If you have a coop and keep them in there for 3-4 days they will learn (hopefully) that the coop is their home and that it is also where they should lay eggs. Then you can let them free range and they should still lay eggs and sleep in the coop at night.

Predators are still an issue though. Maybe a livestock guardian dog could help with that? I don't really have experience in the way of dogs though.
