We couldn't afford the hardware cloth for our run, so we made sure our coop was very secure. So far the chicken wire is working just fine. We have a secure backyard with 3 large dogs in it. The hens put themselves to bed when it gets dark, & I lock up the pop door. We did put hardware cloth on our coop windows, & the run door, but other than that, the run is covered with chicken wire.

My run was the same, and I added 2"x4" wire fencing to the lower 2', to help make it safer. And I locked everyone in their coop every night. This spring I'm finally rebuilding the run to be really safe! Mary

Chicken wire is not a good idea, as MANY predators will go right through it.  Hardware cloth, with 2"x4" woven wire fencing as backup, will protect your birds.  Mary

Your right, it is much better. But this pen is also in my back yard that has privacy fence on the sides and the chain link at the back. We have 7 dogs that are out there a lot. The only real time I am worried is at night when all the dogs are inside. But they will be locked up i the coop i am putting I as well. My neighbor has his the same way and has had no problems in the 2-3 years he has had his. I will be adding 2x4 wire, but I want to get them out of the tractor i have them in. Plus an older man i know has his in a pen with only chicken wire and its surrounded by woods and has had no break ins and he doesnt have an enclosed coop. I do plan on getting some of the red eyes tho.
