i bought 7 silkie chicks from a woman at a nursery with the parents on the premesis and they were all BEAUTIFUL! so i took all seven of them for 35 dollars. 5 dollars a piece. She said there all perfect and yada yada yada. and im a HUGE sucker for silkie

i have them home now and now that they have settled in i have been starting to handle them and everything. WELL so far 2 out of 7 have 4 toes on one foot and 5 on the other. so i called her back and she then tells me that her birds are from Cackle Hatchery and My Pet Chicken. so thats "hatchery" lines and now i have silkies with weird toes.

sorry for the rant lol

Unless you are planning on showing them I wouldn't think to much of it. I paid $8 a piece for my silkies (hatchery) and if I was to get a better quality bird I would expect to pay much more and not get them from hatchery stock. If it is a big problem for you maybe next time count feathers and toes before making the purchase?

Lol, I have had birds with defects who ended up being my absolute favorites

LOL of course these "defected" silkies are the sweetest and cutest and just love to be with people and i would NEVER return an animal because there is something wrong or aestetic reasons its just dumb but the lady could have been up front about it

You are right, she should have been upfront about it. I felt that way when I got my ducks from Metzer Farms, I got Welsh Harlequins and we will just say they do not conform to the Welsh Harlequin standards but I sure do love them to death! I learned my lesson with that one, now if I am very specific in what I am looking for I make sure to do my research. There us to much room for error otherwise. A lot of places and people are just out to make a buck no matter what. One of my $8 dollar hatchery silkies was on the brink of death when I picked it up from the store. I asked them if they would let me get a new chick if it died overnight (looked like it was gonna die right then and there) and they said sorry, if you want to risk it its your choice. I did and I am glad I did. The poor thing was frozen and lay dieing on the side of the cage away from the heat lamp cause it couldn't move. As soon as I got it in the car and put it under the heater it started coming back to life. It was running around by the time we pulled into our driveway. Wish people had to have a compassion license to breed.......
