Starting with half or whole?

Coop is currently in work. Sometime in the fall (I think) I had planned to order my chicks. Was thinking about 15 mixed breed, egg layers, day old chicks. During a conversation with an "Old Time Chicken Farmer": he suggested to get half the flock and then at a point in the future get the other half. He reasoning was that you only had half your flock going through their phases of life not the whole flock.
Belated welcome to BackYard Chickens!
The farmer who advised you to start with half of your eventual goal gave good advice, egg-wise. Because if you get, say, 7 or 8 egg-layers, when they come into point of laying, your first season they will all lay nearly every day. I had 9 hens last year and I had eggs piling up. It’s just my husband and I.
This is my hens’ second winter and their eggs are way down (still enough for two people). And, we lost two hens.
This Spring I plan to get four to six chicks again.
