Hi---I think my name on this board about 2 years ago is "11 biddies and 1 rooster". Well, I wound up with 12 roosters----I loved all my roosters and each had their names--and they had lovely high, dry My 2 favorites I gave to a ranch/cow farm where they would only get cracked corn, but shelter at night and the lady wanted roosters----soo---the rest of them ran around here and I would feed them in the yard 2-3 times a day, since I feed the wild birds 2X a day too---Well, one of the roosters was bound and determined to take over the chicken coop (an old fish station which I had screened and had wired?? (little squares?) fence type thing----and that rooster "Henriatta" attacked everyone except me and one day Henritta could hardly walk---She would take 2-3 steps and flop down on her behind-------Now, mind you, I have still have 7-8 roosters running the neighborhood who Henrietta will not allow in the coop at night---{the remainder of my loveys are sleeping in the trees above the coop}---Anyway, it turned out, this high school kid pulling weeds I hired, took his shovel and hit Henrietta on the back, because of her attacking (friend or foe) except me---that's why she kept flopping every 2-3 feet------Then, my other roosters {who sleep in the trees} start pecking on Henrietta---So then I had someone twist her neck quickly and bury her------I do not know about chickens, except what they teach me------- There was always one my roosters who always came home, kinda attentive, and appeared to me to be loving in his own way-----Around 5 o clock, I'd start shouting--- "Foghorn !!!---Get home!!"----( Foghorn is white with silver feet)----A year ago last April, I received three 1/2 grown rusty with white markings females (Ladybug, Nutterbutter & Appleblossom)-----and they have a 25' x 12' outdoor fence, covered with fencing on top (hawks) outdoor run, plus about a 2 x 6 outdoor hard covered roof, plus their high, dry coop with broom sticks for roosting etc etc etc======----------------HERE IS THE PROBLEM--------------RATS---------How do you keep RATS out of a chicken coop?
