state abbreviations

LOTS of people think that AR = Arizona

Others think Arkansas should be AK, but that's Alaska and it's a far putt from here...
Nobody has ever confused AR with Alabama (when speaking to me) at least not yet anyway :lol

Yes, but someone could easily confuse Alaska for Alabama

I have family in Arkansas and every year when I send out Christmas cards, I always have to check to see if it's AR or AK

Pretty much most people get Alaska mixed up with Arkansas.
VERY frustrating when it comes to make orders

A camp I used to work at ordered a water trampoline, and the company ignored that they were told Alaska, and they sent it to Arkansas. What a mess

Yup, easy just going by the first initial of each word... I think all the two word names do... from NH to NM and all the NDs in between...

On GA and VA though it's the first and last letter in the one word name. That's the rule for Maine & Maryland too.

Some used the first two letters, like AL (Alabama), AR (Arkansas), MA (Mass), MI (Michigan)

Others just picked the first and then a random selection, like AK (Alaska), AZ (Arizona), TX (Texas) or TN (Tennessee)... hmmm perhaps it isn't so random, maybe that's the letter THEY have that the other A or T state doesn't have?? That works for some, AZ AK for example, but doesn't explain why Montana is MT but Minnesota is MN... both have Ns and Ts.

Interesting the way it worked out.

I got your answer there....the second letter it the first letter of the next syllable. Seems like the one syllable states use the first and last letter of the state for the abbreviations.

Same as I just said above for Michigan. Mich for M and igan for I seems right where the second syllable starts is the next letter. The first it the first letter obviously.

The AA abbreviations is funny that would not work at all.

Hmmm it seems that there is a lot that are either the first 2 letters, the first letter of the first 2 syllables, first letter of two worded states, I think hawii is not because of first and last it is first letter of the second syllable cause it is an I again.

Any other similarities you see?
