Gruesome find in the brooder last night. I walked out to check on the grow outs and found a cream leg bar cockerel hanging from the string that holds the feeder treat BabyCakes. He had somehow managed to pull the string off, flipping the bottom side up to get caught on a bungee card and dropping the top hang down around his neck. I would post a pic but it is pretty gruesome. It took me a long time to figure out how it could have happened because the s hook was at the bottom and the X shaped piece of plastic that supports the feed cake was at the top.

Here I cropped the pic.

You can see the S hook around his neck strangling him. That was the top hanger for the feed cake. The bottom had gotten hooked on the bungee cord hold up a red party bulb.

I swear, the weirdest things happen to my birds!

It is a good thing I had breakfast already.

I am so sorry!

I opted not to pay to test the feed Molly. The rest are doing fine though and I am still using the same bag of feed.

I often wonder how chickens get into so much trouble!

Quote: The Blue Egg Layers form the UofA kept jumping up into the brooder light. I was very worried that they would get stuck up in it. I have been lucky so far that none of mine have done stuff like that.

I know why they say turkeys are dumb. I had two wild male Toms fighting in the pasture this morning.

Where did they choose to fight?

While they were eating!

Go over the obvious with her. I once had a guy pick up chicks and he kept calling to say they were dying. I asked him what the brooder temp was and he didn't realize they needed heat!

I have went over EVERYTHING! She keeps calling me and I go over it again and again... Mine are NOT dying. She has sent me pictures of her set up, it looks great. She does have purina chick starter, so I thought maybe...... It's hard when I'm not having the same problem with mine.
