Prices are ridiculous, for sure. We, too, are living on retirement - a limited income. Though I am grateful for the benefits from the UPRailroad (free insurance and both of us get a check), we have had to change our ways.

We bought a (organic, grass fed) beef last year for $2. a pound. Our freezer was full, but we are nearing the bottom now. I will do this again - search for a good deal to fill the freezer.

Ribs......... sound so good. BBQ ribs are one of my favorite foods.

Wow, you won't find any beef here - especially organic & grass fed for that price! It's not that the ranchers are trying to get rich. It costs wayyy more than that to raise cattle. Hay prices are so high that small producers can't even break even. Even with pasture, I have to pay for the electricity to get the water pumped out of the ground.
It's really scary that producing food costs so much that many consumers can't afford to eat.

I can't pay $5/lb for beef, though that may be reasonable for some cuts of it. I won't pay $10-15/ lb like I've seen some of it even if I could. I realize it costs to produce it, though I think the system is at fault. Costs could be less if the system wasn't so flawed and we weren't sending beef overseas and shortchanging our own citizens, but we are all caught in the system and it's a vicious merry-go-round. I can't help how much someone must charge under our current system for their beef. I just cannot pay it. I'm stuck living on way under $20K per year and that isn't going to change for awhile. Just have to live as best I can and if that means not eating meat at all, then that's what we have to do.

Kathy, $2/lb for ANY beef is a bargain! Amazing.

I got the curtains up in Coop#1 at dusk. Skye had to help me as usual. She is so nosy.


Then all three old girls came in to settle for the night.



I gave it some time and went out after dark and found all the Icelandics on the roosts too!

Wait a minute, they look a little crowded.



OMG! Stella!


Maybe the problem with sleeping in the nest box is because Stella rules this roost!



Tomorrow night the game cam is going in there. I need to see what she is up to at night! Gotta love her!

We buy ground chuck on occasion when it goes on sale for under $3/lb and the most meat we buy is boneless, skinless chicken breasts when they are under $2/lb. We aren't vegetarians, but we're almost being forced to be. I REFUSE to pay the prices they are charging on principle alone. I don't just grumble then give in, I simply refuse. I don't think we've ever paid $5 / lb for any meat. We can't afford to when we are living well below poverty level and at every turn, the gov't has its hand in our pockets is trying to take away more and more of the retirement benefits that my retired disabled Air Force Msgt husband earned. So, we just try to survive and grow what we can grow.

thats too bad about that we also want to be as self sustaining as possible. We are working on it all be it slowly.
