Too bad you're so far away...my mom has a honeybee nest in the wall of her house. They swarmed last summer, in the top of a very old maple tree next to the house. A guy down the road wanted the swarm, but he doesn't have the cherry picker thing like you do and he couldn't get to them. He was most disappointed...

Bees would be interesting but I'd need to do a lot more research on care and so forth before taking the plunge...maybe in a couple of years. In the meantime, cool pictures!!!

I REALLY want some honey bees but I am so scared of getting stung!!! I have 5 acres of land and perfect places for hives. *Sigh* I need to get over the fear of being stung.

Our local museum of natural history had a hive in glass inside the museum that had tunnel acsess to outside so you could sit and watch them come in and out doing their little thing...
The bees were donated in 1991 and all of a sudden last year they started leaving. Now if you're lucky you can sit and see one or two but the colony is gone. I wonder what made them leave and I wish someone would donate a new batch to them, they were the highlight of the museum for me and I would go just to see the bees

Jenna, find a bee club in your area and go to some meetings. Get to know some of the members. There will be someone there who will be willing to let you tag along to their apiary, perhaps the club even does a group type thing where all members inspect hives together.

The sting part really isn't so bad. When you get stung if you scrape the stinger out rather quickly, the impact of the sting is greatly minimized.

Go ahead and step into my world if you will, I know you will like it!

I posted on the other bee thread but I just had to say it here too... I have bees!!! They seem to be settling in very well so far. Within several hours of putting them in the hive, we could see bees going in and out, some with pollen! I hope we managed to get the queen, though we never saw her (I think we got about 85-90% of the swarm). Hopefully this will be a good strong hive!

Checking out the swarm before we started to put it in the box:

Some of the bees didn't want to leave the box right away so we left it sitting next to the hive and they were all in within 30mins of leaving the box there:

Hurray!
