Catstar congrats on finding a job that makes you happy too

I worked in one of those jobs where there was more back stabbing and gossiping going on then anything else. The boss was a self absorbed jerk and the only thing good about it was the $. I gave up the job after 16 years, packed up my life (son included

) and moved to another town and took the first job I could find. (Had it lined up just 1 week before I got here) It was as a hotel maid. Now most people would think Ewwww! I will tell you what, it was heaven to me. Yes it was hot, dirty and physically exhausting, but there were no mean souls lurking around, nobody following you every second waiting for something to talk about. It was quiet and peaceful!

Sometimes enough is just enough and it's time for a change but it takes guts and nerve to make that change sometimes. You're awesome for taking control of your happiness. I did the 'chamber maid' thing long ago and it WAS hard work but it also appealed to my ADD/OCD tendencies

It also gave me renewed respect for others who have service jobs. If you ever get the chance, watch "The Philosopher Kings". Not meaning to hijack the thread.... but it really gives you some insight to things you never really think about. They played it here at DukeU. - it's about University life from the custodians' points of view. It was moving, to say the least!
As someone said before, we have jobs and should be grateful but having a bad job can also be bad for your overall health and well-being!

No, There doesn't seem to be much turnover, and they promote from within. Recently, a dept was eliminated. Instead of just letting everybody go, they absorbed them into other areas. That took up a lot of the potential openings that would have occurred through normal attrition. A few people left, but only because they chose to not go to other departments. I really like this place. I'm glad I was laid off from my old job.

I googled The Philosopher Kings, it looks very interesting. I am going to check it out, thank you for the recommendation. The end to my story is I moved here, worked that job, and raised my son. Then I met my now husband, he swept me off my feet and 6 months later we were married. He has made it so I can finally be the stay at home Mom I always wanted to be. On top of that he lived in the country so I left all that BS, moved to a new town and found love, happiness and chickens out in our paradise on the prairie!!
