Steps for a newbie?

This where I *think* I would need to start.

1. Get zoning information! *I have a call in.*
2. Pick a breed. *I think I might like one of a few different kinds.*
3. Pick breed/size-appropriate coop/pen plans and construct.
4. Get chickens. Girls, not boys, since I have close neighbors.
5. Convince hubby not to leave me.

What am I missing?

BYC is good. There is much here. But I recommend you purchase and read an appropriate book on the subject. Get the information you need in a concise form, where it can be readily at hand.

You've got the first step done....coming here to BYC!! lol This place is great, and I have learned a lot just doing searches here and reading what others have gone through. The coop designs, feeding, health issues, etc are all very informative. Let us know how things progress!!

and I have recommendations, girl! Buy lots and lots of paper towels at Sams or Costco, and make it the cheapies. Use a 6 or 7 layer bed of this in the bottom of your brooder until your angels are several weeks old. Several times a day, just pick up several layers and replace them. If water spills, wad the whole shebang up and replace it. This does two things: prevents babies eating shavings (can be deadly) and is super easy for you to do a quick brooder cleanup. The paper towels soak up the moisture in the poo and really help keep things clean. By the time they start deciding to eat paper towel, you can switch them to PINE shavings. Not cedar, never, ever. Also, medicated feed is critical. Order AviaCharge 2000 now from Murray McMurray or Strombergs. It gives a boost to droopy chicks and you will use it, occasionally, forever. My girls have it in their water today because it's so hot and they haven't had any in about a week. Buy chicken-raising books. Delve into every nook and cranny of BYC. And, this is a big one, don't be afraid to ask any and every question. My ladies are 8 weeks old, and I have gotten so much wonderful help from these folks. Again, welcome!
